Exam Pattern:
- IIT Madras announced the IIT JAM 2024 exam pattern in the information brochure along with the exam notification.
- The conducting body will administer the exam online as a computer-based test (CBT) on February 11, 2024, in two slots: forenoon and afternoon.
- The first/forenoon slot will conclude at 12:30 PM, and the afternoon slot will conclude at 5:30 PM.
- There will be a total of 60 questions, carrying 100 marks, divided into three sections: A, B, and C.
- The exam aims to test students’ subject knowledge from their respective undergraduate courses.
- Questions will be in the format of MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions), MSQ (Multiple Select Questions), and NAT (Numerical Answer Type Questions).
- All sections are compulsory for all candidates.

IIT JAM 2024 Negative Marking Information:
Candidates should be aware that negative marking is applicable in IIT JAM 2024. The deduction of marks for each section follows the outlined scheme:
- Section A:
- The exam will deduct 1/3 mark for each incorrect answer to a one-mark question.
- For each incorrect answer to a two-mark question, 2/3 mark will be deducted.
- No negative marking for unanswered questions.
- Section B:
- No negative marking in this section.
- No provision for partial marking.
- Section C:
- No negative marking in this section.
Note:
- Candidates must select answers for MCQ and MSQ-type questions.
- For NAT questions, candidates can use a virtual numeric keypad.
- The computer will automatically close the examination after three hours.
- Candidates can use the online virtual calculator during the IIT JAM 2023 exam, so they do not need to bring additional calculators.
- A scribble pad for rough work will be provided, and candidates must return it at the end of the examination.
Important Instructions for IIT JAM 2024 Exam Pattern
Candidates should keep the following instructions in mind while appearing for the exam.
- The exam room does not allow cell phones and other electronic devices.
- Additionally forbidden are charts, graph sheets, and tables inside the exam room.
- For rough work, a scribbling pad will be provided; it must be returned after the test.
- Candidates must use a mouse to select responses for MCQ and MSQ questions and a virtual numeric keypad to input responses for NAT questions (the computer’s keyboard will be disabled).
- The computer will automatically finish the exam after the allotted three hours.
- Use of unfair means by a candidate in JAM 2024, whether detected at the time of examination or any other stage, will lead to cancellation of their candidature and disqualification of the candidate from appearing in JAM in future.
